Semi-field and field experiments were carried out to evaluate the biological control potential of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) against grubs in hazelnut, chestnut and cherry orchards. Mortality of hazelnut weevils in interred containers treated with 2.2x106 infective juveniles (IJ) m-2 of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora was 75.4%. H. indica caused 65.2% and S. feltiae 43.3% pest mortality, but numbers were not significantly different from the untreated control (33.4%). Mortality of the chestnut weevil was slightly increased in S. carpocapsae (2x106 IJ m-2) treated containers (44.6%) compared to untreated control containers (39.2%), but differences were either not significant. Soil applications against the European cherry fruit fly did not lead to any... |

Meligethes aeneus (pollen beetle) are a threat to oilseed rape. They migrate to the crops during the spring, damaging buds to feed on the pollen and nectar in the buds. In Swiss organic production as well as in Swiss IPM-production the use of insecticides in oilseed rape is prohibited. FiBL is developing an alternative non-insecticidal method to control pollen beetles. During migration, oilseed rape pests use volatile cues (signals given off by plants) to locate their host plants. This project is developing a control strategy for the pollen beetle based on repellent odors. By introducing odors to the field, the beetles find it much harder to locate their host plants. The project started with lab screenings of different essential oils, then, based on the... |

Abstract: The effect of exclusion fences on the colonization of broccoli and kohlrabi by the Swede midge, Contarinia nasturtii (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae). The Swede midge Contarinia nasturtii (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) is an important and wide spread pest in Europe. In Swiss organic vegetable production only the expensive product “Audienz“ (active matter: Spinosad) is permitted. In addition, netting the entire crop surface can exclude the Swede midges from crops, but it has a negative influence on the microclimatic conditions and the labour and capital cost are often too high. Since it is known, that several vegetable key pest species spread within the crop or only a few centimetres above it, the use of vertical exclusion fences has been developed in Canada.... |

Drosophila suzukii is a major pest of soft fruits. Baited traps are widely used for monitoring and mass trapping: different commercial baits, different recipes for home-made baits as well as several literature references on attractive compounds are available. In a series of 15 laboratory experiments we compared the attractiveness of different baits for D. suzukii: the commercially available Dros’attract (Biobest Belgium NV) and the Gasser-bait (Biologische Becherfalle für die Kirschessigfliege Drosophila suzukii; Riga AG), a 4-Component-attractant (Cha et al., 2013) and a self-made wine-vinegar-bait (50 % water, 40 % apple cider vinegar, 10 % red wine, 0.05 % acetone, 0.0125 % soap). Furthermore, we tested if different bait amendments (β-Cyclocitral,... |

Demand for organic cherries offers producers a premium price to improve their commercial viability. Organic standards require that producers find alternatives to pesticides. Soil treatments to control the European cherry fruit fly Rhagoletis cerasi (L.)(Diptera: Tephrididae) appear to be an attractive option. However, soil treatments can only be effective if the migration of flies is low, because mature flies may migrate from near-by trees for oviposition. To examine the general potential of soil treatments and to understand the dispersal and flight behaviour of R. cerasi within orchards, experiments using netting to cover the soil were conducted in two orchards with different pest pressure during two years. The netting reduced flight activity by 77% and... |

The Spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, is an invasive pest in Europe and North America, infesting various soft-skinned fruits. Because D. suzukii attacks ripening fruits shortly before harvest, only insecticides with short pre-harvest intervals can be applied. Alternatively, kaolin, lime and rock dusts are non-toxic to non-target organisms, but the whitish coating on fruits potentially deters oviposition of D. suzukii. Therefore, we tested oviposition deterrence and insecticidal effects of such substances. Female D.suzukii flies were exposed to treated blueberries under laboratory conditions for 24 hours. Kaolin, clinoptilolite, clinoptilolite + Heliosol (pine-oil based wetting agent) and calcium carbonate significantly reduced oviposition,... |
